City Celebrates Onam Malayali Community in Shell

It ‘s probably the biggest festivals in different parts of Kerala. Onam, the annual ritual, where in August the King Mahabali comes to visit his people, spend a lot of fervor in the city that has more than 40,000 Malayalis.

Onachchamayam 2011 was held at Sree Narayana Cultural Mission local satellite on Sunday, where over 1000 Malayalis dress traditionally participated. The event was organized by Ahmedabad Kerala Samajam (AKS). The event featured two hours of music playback telling stories of Adi Shankaracharya, Mahabali and the oracle of the temple, the traditional prayers, recitation of poetry and a traditional rangoli made with flowers pookalam.

According to legend, Vishnu in the Vamana avatar, called the three stages of the land of Emperor Mahabali. In the first two he covered the earth and sky. When the king offered his head to the third stage, the Lord gave him a blessing. Mahabali was allowed to visit his subjects for 10 days each year. The day is celebrated as Onam. “This myth has kept us rooted in our culture for generations, no matter where we live,” said ACS President M Mohanan Nambiar.

“The annual fair, where community members gather to celebrate Onam is also a chance to interact with other Malayalis. Ahmedabad was a wonderful place for the community, and we are grateful to the citizens,” said Babu Ezhumavil, a member of the community.
