2011 census indicates that illiteracy effective in India rose 74.04%, which is 9.2% more than in the previous census. But what is the reliability of census data of 2011?
- Do these experts said at least read a basic textbook?
An article written by two professors at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) said a survey in four states of the Hindi language has shown that the census of 11 figures of illiteracy may be exaggerated to 16, 1%. The main reason for this is that the census methodology was flawed. For the 2011 census, citizens were accepted as writing systems, though they said they could read, but no practical tests were conducted to test their claims to literacy.
In their article titled “Can India ‘literate’ Read! “Studies Prof. Brij Kothari and Mr. Tathagata Bandhopadhyay IIMA with the level of literacy among the 17,782 people in about 20 villages in four districts of the four Hindi-speaking countries.
These districts are Dausa in Rajasthan, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh Umariya and Muzaffarpur in Bihar.
The survey was conducted by the adoption of two methods – counting method (by simply asking the head of the family or the person who, if they can read and write) and reading method (by almost reads a paragraph ).
Kothari and Bandhopadhyay used both the identification method (ask the head of the family or the person if they could read and write) and reading method (asking people to read text) to determine reading.
The document says that the census-2011-method showed an illiteracy rate of 68.7%. Female literacy was found to 55.7% in men and it was 80.4%. But when a sample of respondents were asked to read note 2-text, the results were significantly disappointing. The paper argues that the sample during testing of basic skills in reading have been found, at best, being 52.6% “reading culture.” However, adopted the method of census of 2011 would have found the reading level to 68.7%.
“The identification method may be said to overstate the rate of illiteracy to at least 16.1%,” according to the document paper. The further stated that if the definition of competence is limited to individuals who can demonstrate minimum reading level of Grade 2 (Class 2) level, the literacy rate of further falls to 25.8%.
“In this case, the census methodology is said to overstate the illiterate an astonishing 42.9%,” the paper said. The scientist in their paper, an average Grade 9 education is needed to become a good drive to school. But to become a player throughout the 10 th year a good education is necessary given the current quality of education in rural schools, the paper.
“A score of 4 to 7, the education is more likely to lead to poor reading skills in school and later in life. Those who do not complete primary school to grade 5, it is likely that non-readers later in life, “says the document.
