A 200 year old Baobab tree is ready to go for the first time since it was planted by the British. Gujarat College, which has a British heritage has decided to help the tree which is now under threat – it is in the process of raising Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) corridor. There are only two of this species of exotic trees in the city. The other is at Victoria Garden, Lal Darwaza.

The twist in the fate of the baobab tree that is outside Gujarat College campus came with express bus service `s high Ellisbridge corridor linking. Manoj Patel, a professor of biology, Gujarat College, said. “Two years ago, when the road near the college in Gujarat were expanded, this tree with another 150-odd trees were cut and then we had an appeal against the CM and saved the trees,” said Patel.

The corridor of 1 km long high between Gujarat College, Ellisbridge Church Road and see more than 50 trees are cut, including the Baobab tree.
