The mood of celebrations for Jains of Mahavir Jayanti

Saturday morning set the mood of the celebrations for the Jains in Ahmedabad on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, birthday of Lord Mahavir, that thousands of members of the Jain community was involved in a spectacular Rath Yatra conducted in apartment in the city. Derasars wore a festive look and households Jain enjoyed traditional cakes.

Also known as Mahavir janm Kalyanak, Mahavir is celebrated on the 13th day of the month Chaitra (March-April). Jain pilgrims offering milk, rice, fruit, incense, lamps and water to the idols of Lord Mahavir, the Tirthankar Jainins 24 of that day. Derasars make Aang (decoration of the idol of Lord Mahavir) and decorate their rooms.

The Rath Yatra organized by the Jain International Trade Organization (Jito) was the main event of the festival. More than 20,000 people joined the yatra which started from Annapurna Hall Paldi in the morning and ends near Gujarat College ground after traveling two miles long have route.There nine paintings showing the life of Lord Mahavira, followed by nine elephants, 20 horses and chariots of 35 years, ox-carts. Eight bands, five Mandalis Sharni and others have joined the yatra, which airs devotional floating in the atmosphere.

“It was a Rath Yatra. We have worked over the past month and a half to make it a success. About 30,000 people attended and had lunch later,” said the coordinator of the function for Jito, Mahendra Shah.

“The day began with the worship of Lord Mahavira. I went to Deras and also participated in the procession. He inspired me to hear the message of Lord Mahavira forgiveness. I decided to forgive all those who have hurt me,” said Shah Digpal.

Derasars around the city were decorated with lights and Diya.

Desperate does not miss an opportunity to celebrate the event with special treats. “Traditionally, we prepare and Chana Khir. In the evening we lit Diyas home, as they do on Diwali, after attending the celebration of Mahavir janm Derasar one evening. There was also a time for family reunions, “said Saloni Jain.

  1. Mahavir jayanti is mainly celebrated in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Mahavir jayanti is observed in a calm manner. Jains gather at temples and offer prayers and visit their sacred places by worshipping the tirthankaras.
