Do you park your two-wheeler in the dedicated parking strip along the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) before jumping onto the swift moving public transport? If the answer is yes, then your free treat is over. If everything goes as planned by the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL), citizens willhave to shell out money to park their vehicles along the BRTS corridor.
The AJL, which has short-listed two bidders, will be holding final negotiations with them to lower the rate for the pay-and-park facility.
“After floating tenders for the fifth time, two bidders fitted the criteria. But their proposal has slightly higher rates than the rates finalized by the AJL. So, we will hold a final meeting on Thursday to finalise things. If they agree to lower the rate, the AJL would implement the parking rates soon,” said a senior AJL official.
The AJL has identified three spots to introduce pay and park along the BRTS corridor – from AEC to Shivranjani, from Shivranjani to Nehrunagar and spaces under the flyovers at Shivranjani, Memnagar and AEC. In total, the stretch has a capacity to park around 327 auto-rickshaws, 2722 two-wheelers and 210 four wheelers.
The officials said, once the negotiations are successful, it will be up to the AJL chairman and municipal commissioner IP Gautam to decide the date to start the facility.
To elicit response from the bidders, the AJL had worked out all formulas before floating the tender for the fifth time. The officials not only invited tenders in Gujarati language but also informed all its existing parking contractors to make a bid. After all these efforts, the AJL managed to attract half a dozen bidders and will finally negotiate for the proposal with the two narrowed-down bidders on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the AJL is not happy with the performance of the AC bus, and has asked manufacturers Ashok Leyland to send another one with the required modification.
