Income tax (I-T) search was carried out on premises of at least 10 big onion traders all over the state as part of the nation-wide search operations to track whether hoarding is one of the reasons behind the onion prices sky rocketing all over India. In Gujarat, the I-T team swooped down on warehouses of two wholesale dealers of onion in Ahmedabad. In all, 10 searches were carried out in the state, including Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara.
Officials said that huge stocks of onions were found with the dealers. Investigations are on to find whether stocks were hoarded or were legally accounted for. Rising onion prices have become a raging issue in the country. In the past fortnight, retail prices sky rocketed to Rs 70 per kg. Experts in the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) had said that the prices had zoomed due to unseasonal rainfall. However, despite fresh stocks arriving from Saurashtra and Maharashtra, the prices have remained constant at Rs 50 per kg, much to the chagrin of the poor and the middle class who are finding it exceedingly difficult to put a square meal on the plate. On Friday, secretary of the APMC NI Chasatia said that 33 trucks of onions had arrived in the market. The wholesale price in the market was Rs 35 per kg.
In retail markets, onion continued to sell at Rs 48-55 per kg depending upon the area. Source by The Times of India
