Four persons were reported dead and 16 others injured when an illegal five-storeyed under-construction building collapsed in Ahmedabad’s walled city neighbourhood of Kalupur on Friday morning.
With rescue operations being carried out manually due to congested, narrow bylanes, the exact death toll is expected to be known only after debris is removed, said authorities.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has ordered an inquiry. While two town inspectors have been suspended, two builder brothers, locally known as the Batas, have gone absconding along with a third partner.
A complaint has been registered against them at the Kalupur police station.
The building came crashing down between 7.30 am to 7.45 pm in Saudagar ni Pol. “We first thought it was an earthquake. There was a loud sound and mud everywhere,” said a resident who rushed out as the building first tilted and then collapsed, taking down with it adjacent tin-roofed homes.
Some said construction workers lived in the ground and first floors of the building. The four dead have been identified as Nasim Sheikh (40), Abdul Qadir Sheikh (20), Mubina Sheikh (28) and Arbaz (15).
Officials of the Emergency Response Service (ERS) said five of their ambulances have been deployed in the area and injured were shifted to the hospital. Deputy Municipal Commissioner I R Patel later admitted the building was illegal and promised swift action. Source by Indian Express
