You may call the city police liberal or the city’s residents disciplined, depending on how you see it, but it appears that New Year’s eve didn’t turn out a chaotic event after all.
The cops nabbed just two people from the city’s posh localities, while 21 were caught in drunken condition from the eastern part of the city. No major accidents, no speeding cars and no major brawls – the night of December 31 proved to be a rather well-managed one.
Not only did the city police manage to control party-goers and prevent them from disturbing peace, they also kept a close watch on all the important junctions of the city.
Several police teams and personnel were on their toes throughout the night on account of the celebrations in the city, which seems to have made all the difference.
Sources said that the police nabbed Kamlesh Solanki and Anil Solanki, both residents of Gulbai Tekra, for allegedly being on the move after consuming liquor. They were booked by the Navrangpura police.
Cops kept a close watch on party junctions, for effective management of traffic as well as of crowds, and to swing into action whenever physical force was needed.
Mild lathicharge had to be carried out in parts of Vastrapur and Navrangpura, to control the crowds on the roads. However, no official complaints have been filed in this regard.
“Most party venues were forced to shut down by 11 pm or 11.30 pm, and strict police bandobast was maintained across the city,” a senior cop said.
Traffic though, was maddening in several parts of the city, and minor accidents and hits were reported from across Ahmedabad. However, the cops managed to keep the swelling crowds under control, and by 1 am, most city roads were perfectly calm.
Similarly, rural and semi-rural areas of the city including Bopal, Shilaj and other parts on the outskirts also remained calm, and no untoward incidents have been reported.
“Some cases of alcohol consumption were detected. However, by and large, New Year’s eve remained peaceful,” said inspector general of police for Ahmedabad Range, Ashish Bhatia, to DNA.
