The government may slap tax on sugar imports from January

(Reuters) – The government may slap tax on sugar imports from January after reviewing output estimates for the new season that began in October, Farm Minister Sharad Pawar said on Thursday.

“First we will look into production, then we will decide,” he said in response to questions on whether the government would reintroduce an import tax on sugar from 2011.

India had dropped a 60-percent import tax on sugar in 2009 and has allowed duty-free purchases until Dec. 31.
