Science is the future, professor tells Ahmedabad kids

Prof N Mukunda, vice-president, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, addressed 260 school students from 10 schools of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar on ‘Opportunities in Science’ on Wednesday at Gujarat Science City (GSC). He said, “Students, today, are overloaded with information. They get access to
lot of facts and data, which wasn’t possible and available in our times.”

On the educational scenario in India, Prof Mukunda said, “There are around 25-26,000 colleges in India offering courses in the field of science. There are 450 universities in India today, whereas in our times, there used to be only around 15 to 20 universities.

Though the number of universities has increased, the quality of education has not improved over the years.”

He stated that there are 5lakh schools in India which provide education only till 10th standard. “An alarming trend is that
only 10-11% of students in India are able to complete university education after schooling,” he added.

On the occasion, Prof Utpal Sarkar, dean of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, Bhushit Vaishnav, academic head, PRL, and Dilip Gadhavi, executive director of GSC marked their presence. The lecture was conducted under the series ‘Science Matters,’ to inspire and encourage students and teachers to take an active interest in the subject and contribute to the field.
