Millions strike against Indian fuel price hike

Millions of Indians have taken part in a nationwide strike to protest against fuel price rises.
The combined national strike forced the closure of schools, markets, offices and transport lines.
Flights were cancelled in Kolkata and Mumbai and trains were blockaded in several rural areas.
Thousands of police were deployed on the streets of the capital New Delhi.

The strike was called by both right wing and left wing opposition parties in response to the government’s decision to scrap fuel subsidies.
The price of kerosene, used by many families for cooking, has already increased by more than 30 per cent in the past month.
But the Indian government says it will not back down.
