A former student of the National Institute of Design (NID) climbed on to the parapet of the institute’s hostel terrace on Wednesday and threatened to jump off “if the authorities did not let him complete his course”. Deepak Mishra, who studied graphic design at the institute, had been suspended last year for ragging and harassing a fellow student. After he assaulted a hostel warden during the suspension period, he was rusticated.
‘Frustrated’ and ‘disturbed’, Mishra decided to threaten authorities into taking him back. On Wednesday afternoon, the 23-year-old climbed the parapet of the boy’s hostel terrace facing the basketball court and threatened to jump. The building is three-storeyed.
Requesting anonymity, a student of product design said, “I heard Mishra shouting from the terrace: ‘The institute authorities are harassing me by not allowing me back into the campus. For the last one year, I have been trying to convince them to take me back but they haven’t reacted. I am very disturbed. I am forced to commit suicide. I will come down only if the director promises to take me back.”
