With 50 pc jump, IIM-C’s two-year programme to cost Rs 13.5 lakh
The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) has increased the fees for its two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme from the current Rs 9 lakh to Rs 13.5 lakh from the 2010 batch onwards.
“We are increasing the fees of the institute to Rs 13.5 lakh for the two-year programme. This hike will make our fees at par with IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Bangalore,” said Ajit Balakrishnan, chairman, Board of Governors, IIM-C.
The latest fee hike by nearly 50 per cent is one of steepest ever in the institute’s history. Earlier, the institute had refrained from the hike and insisted that it (fees hike) was not a “make or break” issue for IIM-C, the oldest IIM in the country. In February 2009, the institute had increased its fees from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 9 lakh.
Citing reasons for the hike, institute officials said they would require the resources to provide more scholarship to students and invest in infrastructure to make it a world-class institute.
“We have about ten per cent students who avail of full scholarships. With the hike in fees, we will increase the number of such students in each class,” said Balakrishnan, adding that the government does not fund higher education.
“With this hike, we would be comfortably placed in terms of infrastructure upgrade and paying increased salaries to the faculty as per the Sixth Pay Commission for at least a few years,” said Dinesh Verma, chief administrative officer, IIM-C.
In 2010, the institute was supposed to admit about 464 students, the largest intake across IIMs. On account of shortage of faculty and infrastructure, the institute, however, restricted its intake to 375.
