The drive on Ahmedabad-Vadodara stretch of NH-8, as also on Ahmedabad-Pitol segment of NH-59 connecting Ahmedabad to Indore in Madhya Pradesh, is set to become more comfortable.
According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Rs 10,400 crore-project, which includes road widening work and construction of culverts and over-bridges on the stretches on the two national highways in the state, is likely to be undertaken in the next few months.
While the contracts for four-laning of the 240-km long Ahmedabad-Pitol Road via Kathlal, Godhra and Dahod have already been awarded, the tender process for six-laning of the 102- km long Ahmedabad-Vadodara Road is in progress. The land for both the projects has already been acquired.
The decision to widen these two stretches of roads, according to NHAI officials, has been taken in view of the high traffic density. An NHAI survey has found that over 65,000 passenger cars commute daily between Ahmedabad and Vadodara on NH-8.
According to NHAI officials, while contract for Ahmedabad-Godhra portion of NH-59 has been given to SL Infrastructure Limited and China Rail Company, the construction work for the remaining portion between Godhra and Pitol at MP border has been given to BSCP Limited, a Hyderabad-based company. The entire stretch of the road is currently two-laned only, resulting in a lot of inconvenience for traffic movement.
While 40 km stretch of Ahmedabad-Vadodara stretch of NH-8 is four-laned, the remaining portion is only two-laned. When approached, NHAI Manager (technical) R N Mathur confirmed the development and said that a total of 15 over-bridges would be constructed for six-laning of the Ahmedabad-Vadodara road stretch. He said that while work on the Ahmedabad-Pitol stretch will begin in the next two months, the tender process for Ahmedabad-Vadodara stretch would be over soon and work on it would also start by November-end or beginning of December this year.
