It is back to school for city policemen. The Ahmedabad city police authorities have decided to send all constables and head constables to the crime branch. The short periods of deputation, said crime branch officials, is to enable them to pick up vital details and nuances about crime detection.
“The move is to upgrade the policemen’s capabilities and improve crime detection rate,” said a senior police official. The focus will be on cyber crime detection tools, forensic investigation and specialised techniques used to detect cases of abduction and loot.
“Recent trends show that city police officials are more focused on VIP security and routine policing. This has had a detrimental effect on crime detection. For instance, in a number of robbery cases that took place recently, the city police have failed to catch the guilty,” said senior city police officials.
To set it right, constables and head constables from 34 police stations of the city will be sent to crime branch in a phased manner.
Deputy commissioner of police, crime, Abhay Chudasama said, “The first batch of Ahmedabad police constables and head constables have arrived for training. We shall provide all possible help.”
