Autorickshaw fares may go up in Ahmedabad

A Notification announcing hike in autorickshaw fares is likely to be issued on Wednesday, said Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Coordination Committee after a meeting with senior Transport Department officials in Gandhinagar on Tuesday. Committee convenor Ashok Panjabi said a decision on fare hike would be taken after a meeting with Minister of State for Home Amit Shah on Wednesday.

After a three-and-half-month wait, autorickshaw drivers decided to flex their muscles once again to get their demand for fare hike and lowering of CNG gas price fulfilled.

They proposed to go on strike from February 8 to 10 in Ahmedabad if the demands are not met in the Wednesday meeting.

Panjabi said the demands included establishment of around 1,500 stands for autorickshaws in the city by the municipal corporation and police.

“We have also demanded the setting up of an autorickshaw driver welfare board and a stop on the issuance of permits for new autorickshaws,” he said.

Transport Commissioner J P Gupta said his meeting with driver unions was a positive one.

The drivers had gone on a daylong strike in November. Later, they postponed their plan following assurances from the state government to find an amicable solution to issue.
