A piece of jewellery is sold every four minutes via the eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) online marketplace whereas a laptop sells every 130 minutes, according to a survey.
Other preferred items traded via eBay include mobile handsets, apparels, pen drives, books and magazines, beauty and health products, video games, home appliances, digital cameras, movies, car accessories and fitness and sports items, in that order.
Based on the number of transactions, the eBay India Census 2009 also revealed that Ahmedabad buys the most Hindi arts films, exports the most Hindu religious paintings to international buyers, and sells the most printed silk saris, embroidered salwar suits and lingerie.
But this city has slipped from its seventh largest e-commerce hub status in 2008 to the ninth position with Jaipur and Pune growing faster than Ahmedabad, Mr Muralikrishan B., Director, Categories and Products, eBay India, told reporters while releasing the report for the January 2008-June 2009 period.
eBay, founded in 1995 as a global online marketplace and now a Fortune 500 company with gross merchandise volume (GMV) totalling $60 billion in 2008, had sold a business jet for $4.9 million as its most expensive item to date.
In India, a Jaipur man sold a ruby for Rs 3 lakh to an American via eBay recently.
Technology is India’s favourite traded vertical category contributing 44 per cent of transactions, followed by lifestyle category at 35 per cent.
eBay India, formerly Baazi.com, acquired by eBay Inc, has over 30 lakh registered users from 2,471 towns and cities.
Interestingly, 747 towns in rural India have emerged as active shoppers online.
Of them, 181 have become export hubs due to the local entrepreneurs who sell to buyers in India and abroad. They include towns such as Bundi (Rajasthan), Thevaram (Tamil Nadu) and Tezpur (Assam).
There are three lakh live listings on eBay India where buyers buy around 2,000 categories of products. Around 12,800 sellers use eBay India as a source of income.
The information technology revolution has made Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat as the most wired States with the most cities where e-commerce originates.
Interestingly, while Bangalore is the fifth largest e-commerce hub after Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Jaipur, Karnataka is not among the most wired States!
