Two city schools make it to Design for Giving contest

VADODARA: Two schools from the city have made it to the top 20 schools selected for the Design for Giving’ contest in which 1,300 schools across India participated.

Tejas Vidyalaya‘s project A Wave of Change’ and the work of students of Bright Day School (BDS), Vasna, with senior citizens were selected for the contest.

The contest was organized by Riverside School in Ahmedabad, which was part of the nation-wide initiative by Give India Foundation to inspire people from all walks of life to give’.

The winners of the contest will be felicitated on Friday at a function to be hosted at National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad, with actor Rahul Bose as the chief guest.

Tejas Vidyalaya’s project dealt with civic infractions in which children from class five, six and seven took to the streets and requested people to stop doing them. These included driving on the wrong side, spitting on walls or roads and parking in No Parking’ areas.

“Each citizen who agreed to join our mission to keep our city clean and safe was given a Proud Barodian Sticker’. A documentary film was also screened to demonstrate the process which was adopted by the students”, said Seema Nayar from Tejas Vidyalaya.

BDS students’ initiative Kshitij – where inexperience meets wisdom’ was a documentation of activities carried out with senior citizens during the Joy of Giving Week. A group of students selected 20 senior citizens from societies near their school. Students persuaded senior members to join in a few activities conducted during the week.

“Initial reluctance was there but after few interactions senior citizens participated in variety of entertainment programmes which included dances, skits and games. Some of the senior citizens also showcased their talents, like singing, playing harmonium and demonstrating yogasana. The students also went visiting temples in the city with them in school buses. The entire interaction was documented and presented for the contest”, said Ratna Saha from BDS.
