Ahmedabad police bust laptop thieves gang, arrest four

Ahmedabad: In an incident that may give police a breakthrough in cases relating to theft of laptops from parked cars in the city, the Gujarat University police arrested four people in this connection.

The four were nabbed while escaping with laptops and other valuables kept in parked cars. The arrested were identified as Ritesh alias Andha Garange, Ajay Bhogekar, Deepak Indrekar and Hiren Garange. The police also seized an autorickshaw and two screwdrivers from the gang.

The police believe that the gang has struck almost all areas of the city at least once. "The gang was active for the last few years and mainly targeted the posh localities of the city," police inspector, Gujarat University, BJ Patel told DNA.

He further said that the arrested four confessed to stealing laptops from parked cars near Elan Fashion near CS Towers."We think at least 100 laptops are likely to be recovered from them once the interrogation is finished," said Patel.

He said that the gang targeted almost all areas of the city but was very active in the posh localities. Ritesh and Deepak are history-sheeters and have been earlier arrested for similar crimes.

"Ritesh was earlier arrested for 15 complaints of laptop thefts while Deepak was arrested in connection with four different complaints," Patel said.

Ritesh, incidentally was nabbed by the Gujarat University police a year ago for similar crime. The police arrested them from near Atlanta Towers in an auto rickshaw when they were trying to prepare for a laptop theft.

"They even changed the number of the autorickshaw from 8244 to 3244," Patel said.A source with the police said the gang either used an autorickshaw or a bike to steal laptops.
