Ahmedabad: For the first time in history of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), there is a change of perspective. Thwarting all efforts by political wing of civic body to recruit second and third class bachelor degree holders to second most powerful post in municipal corporation the deputy municipal commissioner, AMC now contemplates an expert panel consisting of members from IIM-A and other leading urban planning institutes to screen first class graduates and professional degree holders for coveted posts.
AMC recruitment panel would be formed within three weeks precisely as discussions are on formulating a procedure. Since 2000, standing committee and general board two political bodies of AMC had allowed candidates of lesser qualifications to hold these posts. In a way this used to be a ploy by political bodies to recruit DyMCs from the existing pool of officers to form their own groups. Most of these officers were second and third class degree holders. After deputy municipal commissioner ZK Sancha, Devendra Makwana and TG Jhalavadia retired over the last few months, AMC was given a nod by state government for a better qualified, young and professional team in September last year.
“It was strange practice here for many years as those selected for posts like deputy head of department and assistant managers in the two years were MBAs, or first class professional degrees in urban planning and health, while their seniors were mere pass class degree holders. We have nearly eliminated the possibility of recruitment from within AMC. This could have created an imbalance in the team and eligible candidates would not have got a chance. Its a chance to rectify the long standing error,” says a senior member of the standing committee.
