Kankaria hits crescendo at carnival

Ahmedabad: Laser lights dancing to musical tunes created a majestic aura around the more-than 500-year-old Kankaria lake. It seemed on Thursday that the ancient lake came to its elements on the grand opening ceremony of week-long Kankaria carnival.

As the giant gates opened for public, people started thronging to see the newly renovated lake under the mega Kankaria Lake Front Development Project.

A la Hussain Sagar lake garden in Hyderabad, Kankaria was all decked up to greet the massive crowd, who patiently waited to see the facelift of Kankaria, which is now touted as a mega tourist attraction in the city.

The carnival started with a procession of tableaux on rich historical and cultural heritage of Ahmedabad and on the legacy of Mahatama Gandhi.

Elated to see the new version of the lake, Nilesh Vaishnav, a resident of Maninagar, says "I come here every morning for my walk. It is nice to see the neatly laid track and facilities for the revellers. My child is very excited about a ride in the toy train. The place has undergone a great transformation".

More than 70,000 revellers participated in the carnival. People, from every walk of life, came to celebrate the occasion. Food stalls, performance stages and cultural programs caught the fancy of the citizens who brought their children
to be a witness to a grand celebration.

There were some incidents reported of petty thefts, injuries in crowded spots and even children who went missing. "We have got several children who got parted from their parents. Fortunately, no big incident was reported," said an inspector in charge of internal security arrangements.
