Ahmedabad: A 35-year-old air catering service employee, Narayan Vaghela, was killed on the premises of the Sardar Patel International Airport here when an Indian Airlines bus ran over him on Sunday. The victim was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Indian Airlines authorities deny any responsibility for the mishap. “The bus and the driver concerned were hired by a private contractor and Indian Airlines cannot be blamed for the accident,” an official of the National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL) in Ahmedabad said.
The incident took place near the Air Traffic Control tower in the domestic terminal of the airport around 8.30 am. Vaghela, who worked for Conwood In-flight Catering Service, was exiting the airport from the VIP gate after completing his night shift. Around the same time, a driver of an Indian Airlines passenger coach, Mohanlal Parmar, was taking the bus out of the premises, police sources said. They added that when he approached the VIP gate, Parmar “accidentally” pressed the accelerator, supposedly mistaking it for the brake.
The speeding bus crashed past the gate and hit Vaghela, who was rushed to Rajasthan Hospital.
