New Delhi, Sept 16: Three days after the Delhi serial blasts, the hunt is on for techie Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer, the alleged mastermind of the Saturday terror attack, who is believed to be living somewhere around the country’s financial capital, Mumbai.
The Delhi Police, along with their counterparts from Mumbai and Gujarat, suspect Tauqeer sent the e-mails minutes before the Delhi and Ahmedabad blasts. Paramvir Singh, Additional Commissioner of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad, has described Tauqeer as the most wanted man and said that Interpol has been alerted to nab him.
Sources in the Delhi Police believe Tauqeer put together the Indian Mujahideen terror module following instructions from the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The terror e-mail sent through hacked Wi-Fi Internet connections suggest that the outfit operates from Mumbai, Tauqeer’s hometown, they added.
Tauqeer is an IT expert and used to reside in Mumbai’s Mira Road (his family still lives there). He was employed in three different IT companies between 1996 and 2001, when he left the job to “pursue his religious activity”. SIMI chief Safdar Nagori, who was nabbed by the police in Indore, then picked him up in March earlier this year.
Tauqeer’s expertise is making it difficult for the security agencies to track him. In his last e-mail, he even issued a challenge for the security agencies, saying: “Far from solving the Ahmedabad bomb blasts case, this imbecile has still not been able to solve the mystery of a simple e-mail from IM that insults you and proves your lack of ability from time to time.”
Intelligence Bureau sources also believe that Tauqeer was involved in organising SIMI training camps in Karnataka, Hyderabad, Gujarat and Mumbai.
Another prime suspect on the security agencies’ radar is Qayamuddin, whose name was revealed by Mufti Abu Bashar, the alleged mastermind of the Ahmedabad serial blasts, during interrogation. Police suspect Qayamuddin to be a key member of the IM and believe he held several meetings to plan the Delhi attack. He is believed to have resided in Ahmedabad for more than four weeks before the Delhi blasts and even came to the national capital two days before the attack.
The Ahmedabad Police have also handed a list of several other suspects to their counterparts in Delhi. These names cropped up during investigation by the Ahmedabad Police and include Alam, Raqeeb, Afridi and Majid.
