Following the Asaran incident, about fifteen organisations have called for a Gujarat bandh on Monday (July 21). The bandh has been called to register protest against the mysterious death of two students of the Asaram Gurukul. This amalgamation will be led by Jagega Gujarat Sangharsh Samiti (JGSS).
Also extending its support to the band is the Gujarat unit of the Congress, who will protest against the state government for not responding to the demands of handing over the case to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation).
JGSS convener Naresh Shah spoke ahead of the bandh and said, “We expect the people from Gujarat to voluntarily support the bandh to register their protest against the gruesome incident, and the state government for keeping its eyes and ears closed to this issue.”
Earlier, Narendra Modi’s government ordered an inquiry into the attack on the media by Asaram Bapu supporters, following which protesting journalists were detained by the Ahmedabad police. The journalists were carrying out a protest march in the city and the police said that the detention was more like a precautionary measusre.
On Friday (July 18), a television crew of several news channels including TIMES NOW were attacked outside the ashram by Bapu’s followers, as they waited for a scheduled press conference by him — to clarify the ashram’s role in the death of two young boys.
