Ahmedabad, Agitated parents beat up the managing trustee of Jivkorbai Lallubhai Trust (JLS) school in Maninagar on Wednesday after he dismissed allegations that a Class I girl was raped by a sweeper of the school.

The girl’s father had lodged a complaint with the Maninagar police station alleging that Daya Waghela, the school sweeper, had raped his daughter.

The incident came to light after the girl complained of pain and later revealed the happenings of the day to her mother. She said she was also coaxed by the sweeper not to reveal it to anybody saying that other students will not talk to her.

The parents spent two days contemplating action and later complained to the school authorities on Monday, who dismissed it.

On Wednesday, an agitated crowd beat up Managing Trustee Manu Shah and damaged school property. They also pelted stones at the school building.

Shah later suspended the accused, who was arrested by the police. The girl was sent for a medical examination.

Meanwhile, the parents have called a meeting on Thursday.

“There have been earlier incidents of molestation that have been suppressed by the school authorities,” alleged one of the parents.

Dhiru Trivedi, a member of the Parents’ Association, said, “Parents are observing a bandh tomorrow and we will hold a meeting with the school authorities.”

The Youth Congress has called a bandh on Thursday, saying the incident took place in the Chief Minister’s constituency.

“The Youth Congress has planned a protest. It will be held at the campus of the Jivkovarba School in Maninagar, where the incident occurred,” said Ahmedabad City Youth Congress president Rajesh Brahmbhatt.
