AHMEDABAD: Two labourers lost their lives while they entered a clogged sewage line and choked on poisonous gas. Ahmedabad fire brigade officials fished them out dead. Relatives of the victims Shambhu Parmar, 25 and Ghanshyam Vaghela, 31, have registered a complaint against the employers for negligence at the Sanand police station.
On Monday, another labourer, Yogesh Vaghela, 36, choked to death in an AMC sewage pumping station at Saijpur Bogha.
According to eyewitnesses, Parmar and Vaghela were employed by a bread manufacturing unit to clean up the clogged sewage line near the factory unit around 9 am. They cleared up the upper portions but as the line was deep, they entered the line finally around 11.15 am.
“However, the line had hazardous gases. Before they could realize what was happening, they screamed and fell unconscious. The factory workers tried to get them out but they were unsuccessful. By the time the AFB fished them out they were dead,” said HP Mishra, president of Safai Karmachari Swasthya Suraksha Mandal.
Mishra accused the company management of flouting rules of safety of sewage workers. “The state government has made stringent rules for the safety of people entering into sewage lines after several incidents, but they are not being implemented,” he said.
“Their relatives say they were lured by the amount of Rs 200 for the cleaning along with food and drink. It was illegal to hire them. We are investigating the case. As on Tuesday evening, no arrest has been made,” said MJ Pancholi, inspector of Sanand police station.
