New animal helpline begins, will offer free services

AHMEDABAD: See an injured animal or bird writhing in pain, just call up the newly launched Navkar Animal helpline and help will be on the way to treat them that too free of cost! On Sunday, Navkar Treatment Centre, in association with Mahendra Shrimali, an animal lover, launched a dedicated Navkar Animal Helpline in Ahmedabad for animals in distress.

The helpline will be run entirely by animal lovers who will take care of animals and also organize vaccination programmes for them. Shrimali says, "The helpline will provide medical assistance on the spot to injured animals and birds. We have a pool of volunteers and veterinarians who will reach the injured animals when required."
"On the first day of helpline launch, we received more than 20 distress calls, mostly about the injured stray dogs.

In Vejalpur, we rescued a dog who was about to be stoned to death. Local residents thought the dog was suffering from rabies," says Shrimali. "Running a helpline is not about money alone, it requires compassion and love," he adds.

Pankaj Buch, Deputy Secretary, Gujarat Assembly Secretariat and an animal lover associated with the helpline said, "In a mega city like Ahmedabad, we need a robust animal helpline. The issue of stray animals and injured birds has been ignored for long."

He adds, "So far, it has garnered good response from the people," added Buch. Asha Foundation too has an animal helpline for injured animals.
