AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah is exerting to oust Gujarat Cricket Association chief, and Congressman, Narhari Amin only to help Narendra Modi inconspicuously take over the cash-crammed body.
The wily strategy was revealed to DNA by a cricket administrator who had recently moved a no-confidence motion against Amin in the Central Board of Cricket Ahmedabad (CBCA), the most powerful affiliate of the GCA, based in Ahmedabad. And DNA has learnt that once the chief minister is sure that he can garner the required numbers to take over the GCA, he may openly step into the ring.
The official said that Modi’s presence at the GCA’s helm will add impetus to the effort of Arun Jaitley, a BJP stalwart, to increase their (BJP) influence in the BCCI. Jaitley is currently the president of the Delhi District Cricket Association. “The chief minister is very close to Jaitley,” the official said. “And if Modi comes to power at the GCA, it will certainly help the former law minister and BJP as a whole in the long run.”
The official said that Shah was currently gearing up for the CBCA elections. The CBCA has 11 members and the faction controlling it usually commands the GCA. By all accounts the coup plan, involving the CBCA as the first warfront, has already been activated: Amit Shah’s confidante and the CBCA secretary Bharat Dudhia is among those who moved the no-confidence motion against the Amin-led CBC.
“Shah may have taken up the challenge to topple the current GCA administration, but the chief minister is calling the shots,” official said. But those rebelling against Amin recognise that the battle for the GCA will be protracted and that they would need a formidable force behind them. “Brand Modi is big enough. So he is an ideal
person to take on Amin,” one of the GCA members said.
Other GCA sources told DNA that closed-door meetings have become routine these days. “Administrators as well as the opposition members are not letting go of the slightest opportunity to persuade voters,” one of the sources said.
