AHMEDABAD: In a freak accident, a truck ran over two people on the outer ring road near Singarwa in Odhav area then went on to ram several vehicles on the busy Cadila overbridge, which connects the city to Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway, killing two more people and causing a huge pile-up of vehicles on Saturday evening.
Driving at 65 kmph, the truck hit a Santro, an auto-rickshaw, a scooter, three bikes and stopped only after dragging the last biker to the end of the Cadila bridge.
Panic spread on the bridge as vehicles hit each other to get out of the way of the speeding killer truck. A huge traffic jam followed on this road, which gets busy with people heading to or from Vadodara for the weekend.
According to Vatva GIDC police station officials, the same truck had killed two persons in Odhav minutes before it mowed down the other two on the bridge. The Santro skidded to avoid the collision and rammed the railing of the bridge. Next came an auto-rickshaw which lost balance and its two passengers fell out on the road and suffered head injuries. A scooterist and two bike riders were also injured in the collision. The truck finally halted near the end of the bridge when a bike came under it.
According to eyewitnesses, there was panic on the bridge as several vehicles collided with each other. “An auto-rickshaw and a bike collided as they were shifting to the same side. The accidents and the victims’ cries halted the traffic as passers-by gathered to see what was happening,” said a commuter.
“Four injured people were rushed to LG Hospital,” said Harshad Patel, a social worker.
Vatva GIDC police station officials confirmed two deaths. “We are yet to fix responsibility and find the owner of the truck who is absconding. However, our first priority is to clear the road for commuters,” said BL Chaudhary, inspector of Vatva GIDC police station.
