‘Unfair’ lady cop put on Patan case

AHMEDABAD: The Patan gangrape investigations have now landed in the hands of a woman police officer. No good news this. This officer happens to be deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Parikshita Rathod, who has been transferred from Visnagar to CID (crime) in Gandhinagar specially for this case, and is known for her poor record in handling cases related to women’s issues.

Earlier, the case was given to deputy inspector general of police, CID (crime), IM Desai but the authorities changed their mind. Rathod, who was the first woman police officer to join the Gujarat police service, was accused of “rude behaviour” while handling sensitive cases against women. When she was posted in Ahmedabad as ACP, a nurse, who was raped by a doctor, complained to then police commissioner KR Kaushik that Rathod had harassed her by asking her embarrassing and hurtful questions during investigation. The nurse had also alleged that the woman cop often threatened her and asked her to settle the case amicably.

In another instance, Kaushik, worried over the growing number of atrocities against women, had issued a press note asking all victims to contact ACP Rathod on her mobile phone.

As soon as the news was published in newspapers, Rathod changed her phone number.
