Now, IIM-A's Confluence also attracts big bucks

AHMEDABAD: While salaries at IIMs have already crossed the crore mark, the annual business event at the IIM-A, Confluence, too might cross Rs 1 crore next year. The budget of Confluence touched Rs 90 lakh this year compared to around Rs 80 lakh last year.

What started as a low-profile management school event way back in 1999 with marketing fairs and business games at the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad has now turned into a big annual event with the corporate world descending on the campus.

In the last three years, the flagship business event of the premier B-school has attracted the best of corporate and political world including Douglas Baillie of Hindustan Unilever, Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, JJ Irani, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Vijay Mallya, Kishore Biyani, Naina Lal Kidwai of HSBC India, Scott R Bayman, president and CEO of GE India, Praful Patel and Nitish Kumar.

The student participation from across different universities is going up. This year, more than 75 business schools are participating with the number of students exceeding 1200. The international universities coming down this year include Manchester Business School, Lahore University of Management Sciences, Australian Graduate School of Management, Columbia Business School and University of Michigan.

Lately, the event is also getting more thematic. While last year, the theme was ‘India Phenomena’, this year it is ‘India towards Economic Leadership’. “The event is turning more theme-centric and the speakers are being finalised based on the theme of the event this year. This year, we focused on having more of policy speakers,” informed member of speaker cell, Confluence 2007 at IIM-A, Saurja Sen.

The speakers list is finalised with inputs from the advisory committee which includes IIM-A faculty, director and industry players. The advisory committee for Confluence 2007 has S Ramadorai of TCS as its chairman and Deepak Parekh of HDFC as mentor. This year’s speaker list included Baru Rao, CEO, CapGemini India, Arun Maira, chairman, BCG India and Jerry Rao, chairman, MphasiS, among others.

OP Bhatt, chairman, State Bank of India, RS Sharma, chairman, managing director, ONGC, S Ramadorai, CEO and managing director, Tata Consultancy Services and Shashi Ruia, Chairman, Essar Group amongst others.
