Shoppers stop traffic on S G Highway

Ahmedabad, August 19 With
four new malls coming up on half a kilometre stretch on S-G Highway,
people are facing problems of traffic jams on the main artery
connecting North Gujarat with Saurashtra. This became visible on Sunday
evening when traffic went awry on the highway as people thronged the
newly opened RelianceMart and Iscon Mall.

While
people remained stuck in traffic for over an hour on the highway, the
service roads opposite these malls were chock-a-block with vehicles of
all sizes and makes.

Ketan Patel, a
businessman out for shopping with his family, blamed the traffic jam on
the lack of parking facilities offered to customers. “There are no
adequate parking facilities offered by these malls because of which
there was a traffic jam today. In fact, even after parking my vehicle
on the service road, I am waiting to get in as there is a long queue
outside RelianceMart.”

Dinesh
Patel, another angry customer, said: “We were stuck for over half an
hour near the Fun Republic circle because there was a traffic jam
outside both the malls. Even after braving traffic we are still waiting
to get inside these malls. There should be adequate kind of parking
facility made available for customers so that these kind of problems
dont happen.”

On
the other hand, Ashok Sharma, another customer, said: “The rush on
Sunday is because of the kind of schemes being offered by one of the
malls. We were told that the parking lot outside the mall was full and
we needed to park our vehicle on the service road. However, when we
were trying to park our vehicles on the service road, we got stuck in
the jam.’’

As
people queued up outside both the malls, traffic policemen struggled to
keep traffic under control. A traffic policeman present at the spot
said, “I have been posted here since the malls were thrown open to the
public. For the time being, we are directing people to park their
vehicles on the service road instead of the parking lot of the malls.
Although the service road is not a place to park vehicles, we have no
other option.”

Additional
CP (Traffic) Manoj Agrawal, when contacted, said: “We don’t have the
manpower to put our men in front of these malls. The malls have to take
an initiative to control traffic by appointing their men.”
