Ahmedabad, Monsoon
may have put an end to the scorching summer but it has left the prices
of the vegetables in the city soaring again. While some vegetable
prices have increased only by a few rupees, some have doubled due to
scarce supply or spoilt produce. Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Market
Produce Committee says the prices will show an upward trend for the
next couple of days.
A
vegetable vendor in Navrangpura area, Ravi Prajapati said, “The price
of potato which was between Rs 10 and Rs 12 per kg is now Rs 25 per kg
while the price of onion has shot up to Rs 55 per kg from Rs 20 per kg.
We usually get these vegetables from Chimanbhai Market in Vasna and the
supply of vegetables like potato and onion decreases due to the rains
resulting in the prices hike.”
Rita Patel, a
resident of CG Road said, “If the price of vegetables increases in
areas like CG Road, we have to shop for vegetables at cheaper rates in
areas like Khamasa or Jamalpur market.”
Vimala
Desai, a vendor in Mansi area sells vegetables like ladyfinger, earlier
priced at Rs 15 per kg for Rs 20 per kg. Vegetables like capsicum which
were sold for Rs 15 per kg are being sold for Rs 40 per kg and the
price of carrots had almost tripled as they are sold at Rs 50 per kg as
opposed to earlier’s Rs 20 per kg.
Desai
further said, “The price of tomato increased from Rs 20 to Rs 30 per
kg, coriander from Rs 30 to Rs 45 per kg.” Sangeeta Parmar, a resident
of Satellite said, “We can’t help the price hike, I have no other
option but to buy these vegetables.”
President
of Ahmedabad Market Produce Committee, (APMC) JJ Solanki pointed out
that heavy rains could be the sole reason behind the hike in prices of
vegetables.
The supply to the city has reduced to 35 per cent, with most produce in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar getting spoilt.
Solanki
said, “In a days time, the 150 trucks which would bring produce from
different areas of the State everyday has reduced to 40-50 trucks. This
short supply has lead to the price hike. For instance, the price of
cauliflower that we get from Nasik and other areas in Maharashtra has
gone up from Rs 15 per kg to to Rs 25 per kg.”
