Law students to counsel commoners

AHMEDABAD:
Learn while you do! This has almost taken the shape of a full time subject for
the students of the National Law University, Gandhinagar. While they are
learning, they make it a point to do something for the community as well.

Students of the National Law
University have formed a legal service cell under which 27 students and nine
faculty members come together to educate people in the nearby rural areas about
Right To Information Act and their other basic legal rights. The cell was
formally inaugurated on July 17. It also assists the people in need of legal
advice.

Avnish Bhagi, a
faculty member and convenor of the cell, said, “The main reason behind
setting up this cell was to give the students a chance to get hands-on
experience of how to consult people and sensitise our students on the problems
that the public faces.” Besides, the people who are still waiting for
justice get a free consultancy
service.

Talking of one of the
cases that the cell is handling currently, Pearl Kumar, a second year student
and member of the core team, said, “Meeraben from Chharanagar got divorced
almost five years ago. The court had entitled her to maintenance. But she has
still not received
it.”

“The cell has
various divisions under which we consult different cases like consumer
protection, family courts and RTI. In one such case of RTI we are consulting the
son of an AMTS bus driver, who died in a road accident. This boy was to be given
employment by AMTS but it has been almost eight years and he has not received
any communication,” said Kumar Ankit, a third year student.

In another case, a consumer
accused a private bank of imposing inappropriate service charges, which the cell
dealt with by communicating with the bank.

Since the cell was opened,
says Bhagi, “Students are more eager to learn, more enthusiastic and have
started understanding the difference they can bring to lives from their
profession.” Pearl adds, “Earlier, we used to look at issues very
emotionally but now, since we interact with people, we see things more
practically.”
