India’s 60th Independence Day celebrations in the United States (US)
are week-long with parades in places including Boston, New Jersey,
Chicago and New York to name a few.
Eminent personalities like astronaut Sunita Williams, film star
Priyanka Chopra and television artists will also be present at the
parades.
Speaking to a cross-section of young people on this occasion threw
up interesting observations. Payal and Dharmesh Patel of Stamford are
basically from Ahmedabad, Arundhati and Saurav Mukherjee of Boston are
from Calcutta, both appearing for their MBAs in the US, while working,
Priya and Rohit Prabhu of Norwalk have their roots in Mumbai and
Sujatha Janardhanan, a Keralite is now in California for nine years
working for Oracle.
“Independence Day reminds me of our martyrs and our unique
nonviolence movement. I look forward to a safe homeland, free from
internal strife and crime and dream of a society with better status for
women,” said Sujatha Janardhanan, a Keralite who has been working for
Oracle in California for nine years.
“India makes me proud,” said says Payal Patel who has been in the US
for 14 years. “When I was in Bangalore for six months recently, I saw
how so progressive we are.”
“India has grown a lot in the past one decade,” said her husband,
Dharmesh, who hails from Ahmedabad. He passed his engineering course
from Pune in 1998 and came to the US for his Masters.
