GCCI gets on the job to bridge manpower gap, unveils project

Ahmedabad, August 4:L To overcome manpower shortage in industries across the State, GCCI will soon launch an ‘infrastructure project’. The scheme is expected to create a “win-win situation” for industries, students and also the 60-year-old trade body.

Under the project, to start with, industries needing staff would approach colleges in Ahmedabad through GCCI to select candidates from the final-year of graduation courses. It will be somewhat similar to the ‘campus recruitment’ done by big companies. With the help of college authorities, experts from the industry would select candidates and impart them training—lectures as well as practical work within the educational institution. They would come to the college once a week and train students in the type of work expected from them when they join the company. After completion of the training from August to February, students would be recruited but only after they clear their final-year exams. They would be paid salaries as per company rules and commensurate with their educational qualifications and jobs undertaken by them.

GCCI’s new president Paruben Jaykrishna, whose brainchild the project is, says there is a shortage of not only technical persons but also all types of staff _ clerks, accountants, skilled and semi-skilled workers. “The project will be a win-win situation for industry, students as also GCCI,’’ she said. While the industry would get trained personnel, students wouldn’t have to run here and there for jobs. Besides, the industry wouldn’t have to wait to make new recruits fully operational _ generally, the new recruits in companies take two to three months to get trained and their output during this period is very low.

GCCI would act as a coordinator between industries and educational institutions and issue a certificate to students attending training programme, said Jaykrishna.

“The project would target arts, commerce, science as well technical institutions and colleges. To begin with, the project is starting with a commerce college from where about a dozen candidates have already been selected by a local company. The training programme would begin on August 27,’’ she said.

From next year, the training will run from July to February.
