AHMEDABAD:
Failing to get justice from both the police and the court, a family from the
Ambawadi area of the city on Thursday made a vain attempt to immolate
themselves. The family had threatened to self-immolate outside the Gujarat High
Court, but the police put them under house arrest before they could reach the
court.
Rajesh Seth and his
family were protesting, what they claim is inaction on the part of the police to
delay the probe in the dispute over a property in Giriraj park society in
Panchvati area, which he owned. This dispute over the 440 sq metre property goes
back to 1997.
Seth, for the
past couple of days was distributing pamphlets in the high court threatening to
self immolate himself with his family. Seth said, “I constructed a house in 1974
and in 1996 sold it for Rs 37 lakh to an architect couple Hemant Shah and Smita
Shah.” He claimed that the buyer couple told him that they did not have money
and hence requested him to sell the property in two parts. For first portion,
the couple paid him Rs 20 lakh and promised to pay remaining amount in one
year.
Seth claimed that the
couple then came and took his signatures on some vouchers of Rs 20 lakh, stating
that they needed it for Income Tax purpose. Seth said he came to know that the
vouchers, which he took for payment of Rs 20 lakh were tampered with and were
used to make the final payment of Rs 17 lakhs. The matter came to his knowledge
only when he got summons from a civil court to complete registration for the
remaining portion of the
house.
The court after going
through all arguments ordered that the possession of the entire property should
be with Seth till disposal of the case. Seth said that later on, when he found
that the Shah’s had forged the vouchers and tampered with them, he filed a
police complaint and the police, instead of arresting them, closed the case
stating various reasons.
