Gujarat govt questioned on razed dargah of Sufi poet

AHMEDABAD — A Gujarat court has sought a reply from the BJP government in the state and the BJP-ruled civic body in the city by August 13 on the disappearance of the historical dargah of an 18th century Sufi poet, Vali Mohammad, during the 2002 communal riots.

The All-Gujarat minorities association had filed a public interest litigation seeking restoration of the roadside shrine near the police commissioner’s office. According to Dr Mukul Sinha, advocate of the petitoners, the famous small memorial visited by both Hindus and Muslims was destroyed by Hindu rioters on February 28, 2002 at the peak of the three-month-long communal clashes and a makeshift Hindu shrine was constructed at the site overnight.

However, the civic body later razed the shrine obstructing vehicular traffic but did not think of rebuilding the demolished dargah.
