ELABORATE security arrangements have been made for the 130th annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath on July 16.

The yatra will begin from the Jagannath Temple, in the communally-sensitive Jamalpur area of the Walled City. With just four days to go, the police are on their toes to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner J Mahapatra said, “More than 20,000 policemen and paramilitary personnel will be deployed along the entire yatra route.”

To keep a vigil on the procession, foolproof security arrangements have been made. The arrangements include 30 watchtowers and 300 rooftop points at various strategic places on the entire 25-km yatra route. “Apart from this, there will be 50 video recording points, all connected to one control room,” Mahapatra added.

A total of 55 companies of paramilitary forces, including that of the Border Security Force (BSF), will be pressed into service on July 16. Besides, nearly 8,000 personnel of the city police, horse-mounted police officials and policemen from neighbouring districts will also be deployed along the procession route. “We have arranged for bullet-proof jackets, night vision binoculars and goggles for the policemen,” Mahapartra said.

Meanwhile, all police stations in the city and in rural Ahmedabad have been alerted to be extra vigilant. Night patrols and vehicle checks have been intensified across the city and its outskirts. City police have till now arrested 194 people as preventive detention ahead of the yatra. Police said the arrests were made to maintain law and order.
