Even after attaining a diploma in business management Sneha known as DJ Rink prefers to lead her life musically.
For Snehal Shah, best known in music circles as DJ Rink, getting a toehold in a profession dominated by men wasn’t easy. Her passion for music made this Gujarati Mumbaikar pursue deejaying as a career option.
“I have been passionate about music for a very long time. But I never felt that I had the potential to make it big on this platform ,” she says.
Surprisingly, Rink has a fairly impressive set of degrees tucked under her slim belt. A BCom graduate from Mithibai College, she also holds a “diploma in business management and is studying for her Masters.”
One would have thought that her strong academic background would make her go in for a blue-collar job. So what made her a DJ instead ?
“One day I happened to play some tracks at one of the prominent discotheque in Mumbai, just for fun. But the crowd was spellbound and my musical journey began.”
Did she have to learn the art of mixing music as DJ? “In India from A and A under the guidance of one India’s first and most senior DJ, Joe Azerado ,” she elaborates.
Given that deejaying is an unconventional career for a girl, were her parents okay with the idea?
“Yes, absolutely. Though I come from a Gujarati family my parents are very cool about my being a DJ.” Thanks to family support, Rink has been able to break stereotypes.
She has oganised various techno music parties, hosted events, been the emcee on several occasions at various musical events, college festivals, corporate parties and launches.in cities like Mumbai, Indore, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Gandhinagar to Lonavala DJ Rink.
Rink prefers playing anything from House to Tribal, Progressive to trance, techno, hip hop to reggae, retro to rock to world music,” she says.
The future seems promising too. “I have offers to play abroad but nothing has been finalised yet. Besides that I am going to be playing at many other cities later this year.” Way to go girl!
